The Australian National University is set to host the world’s largest gathering of diplomacy experts this 21 – 23 September 2016.

The International Forum on Diplomatic Training (IFDT) will be hosted by the ANU Asia Pacific College of Diplomacy (APCD), with support from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and key ASEAN diplomatic academies.

It brings together leading international experts and provides a unique platform to debate trends in modern diplomacy.

This year’s keynote speaker will feature the Honourable Penelope Wensley AC. Her career highlights include positions such as the Governor of Queensland, Australian Consul-General to Hong-Kong, Ambassador for the Environment, Australian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, New York; High Commissioner to India and Ambassador to France. She was Australia’s first female in each of these posts.

Honourable Penelope Wensley AC and others will address a number of key global challenges, including the shifting global economic balance of power with the rise of China and other emerging Asian countries; growing tensions over territorial and resource conflicts; and flash points like the Korean Peninsula and the East and South China seas.

APCD Director, Associate Professor Jochen Prantl said the forum will be essential training for any diplomat.

“The Forum will ensure that today’s diplomats are prepared with a toolkit to effectively respond to whatever challenges they may face. It will also inform our understanding of the key diplomatic challenges and priorities in the early 21st Century,” he said.

He said winning the hosting rights reflected the APCD’s influence and teaching quality.

“APCD seeks to promote and advance world-class research, teaching, and training in transnational diplomacy,” he said.

“It pays particular attention to the new dynamics arising from the shift in the distribution of power to the Asia-Pacific region. As the only such institute in the southern hemisphere, APCD’s core mission is to understand and explain transnational diplomacy in the Asian century.”
